The Jacob's Dream

The Expertise

It is believed to be a typical work of Daniele Seiter. Pupil of Carlo Loth in Venice, Daniele Seiter spent a long time in Florence and subsequently in Rome where he followed the stream of cortonesque baroque, entering Ciro Ferri’s circle. He also travelled through Lombardy and Emilia. He got involved with Turin’s court at least from 1687, when he was commissioned some oval pictures, that he sent from Rome, for the ceiling of the Royal Palace committed to Brandi. Arrived in Turin in 1688, he remained there until his death, save a few short journeys to Rome. In Turin he introduced the new decorative taste of the Roman Baroque. This beautiful “Jacob’s Dream” undoubtedly belongs to his mature period. In it, one can detect patent figurative reminiscences of his travels and of the relative Italian experiences: traces of the late 17th century Bolognese culture in the dignified figure of Jacob, memories of Venetian light in the landscape. On the whole, in this painting one sees how Seiter, with his clever eclecticism, is capable of merging together elements of different origin in a composite yet extremely spontaneous style that mirrors especially the taste of the late Roman Baroque. The picture, of very high quality, is in an excellent state of preservation. (24 May 1991,  Giuliano Briganti)
