Plain column shaft

Plain column shaft carved in grey granite, not fully preserved. The stone has a greyish background densely spotted with small black and white crystals of various sizes. The upper portion of the shaft is missing, while the lower end – slightly chipped – is cut with a cavetto moulding and a flat fillet (h. 3 cm, projecting 2 cm); surfaces have not been repolished and the lower end has not been reworked. In light of the ratio of 1:8 between the lower diameter and the total height, the shaft in its integrity must have measured approximately 2,5 metres. Grey granite was very commonly used throughout the whole Roman world.
